Urban portraits on location in Cologne or Canterbury

I’ve been working in Germany for the last 48 hours and part of photography involved a short urban portrait session near the riverside in Cologne. You can set up and take urban portraits in Cologne or Canterbury (or anywhere that has large areas of steel, glass and concrete).

Some people wonder why you wouldn’t take portraits with a more interesting or picturesque background, but urban portraits originated from the editorial style of fashion photography. For clothing or hair shoots, the background should never shout more than the clothes or the person being photographed. Urban locations have a neutrality to them (muted colours or large strips of one particular colour) as well as a variety of textures or surfaces.

If you’re thinking of an urban portrait session, it would be great to hear from you. There’s some easy and fun planning to do for the shoot – what clothes to wear, the time of day and most importantly, where.
