Strobist wedding photographers – Whitstable weddings Part 2

Calum & Carien were married at the petite Seasalter old church and then had a drinks reception on the beach. There was no cover on the beach so I used some off-camera flash. I also used flash guns on light stands to illuminate the group picture. This was so that the guests didn’t have to look into the sun (which became the backlight). This is the first time I have photographed in a shirt, cotton trousers and sandals rather than a suit. It was just too hot…

Strobist wedding photographers – Whitstable weddings Part 1

Well, we had a bit of heatwave last weekend and I had two weddings with no cover / natural shade to run to so I resorted to off camera flash for both. The first one, Nat & Dan, the sun was unbearably hot in the open, so we used a shelter end effectively making softboxes out of the windows! Easter weekend – no April showers for a Kent wedding in Seasalter, Whitstable

Posted on April 6, 2010

LukeMary-247
Luke & Mary managed to avoid the poor Kent weather that was forecast on Saturday for their April wedding at St Alphege, Seasalter near Whitstable. They had asked for some shots on the beach – so we had about 20 minutes (as grey clouds threatened the horizon) to work with. I had already identified in my reccie where we could shoot quickly just near the Sportsman. Using the sun to light one side of the couple and a radio-triggered flash on the other we managed to produce something that reflected their playful personality. The venue was surprisingly dark but I had packed some studio lights and pumped light into the roof space to reflect down on the tables below.

Winter Wedding in Kent – Canterbury Winters Barns

Posted on November 23, 2009

Stevens-143

Despite Saturday’s changeable weather, Peter & Dawn had their winter wedding without umbrellas at the Winters Barns in Canterbury Kent. A late afternoon kick-off meant low light and plenty of scope to use off-camera flash and a monopod for the natural light shots. If you’d like to get in touch about planning your winter wedding, I’d love to hear from you. Although based as a photographer in Kent I cover weddings and portrait and commercial work across the UK. Winter wedding musings by a Kent wedding photographer

Posted on November 20, 2009

I was asked to write a piece recently for a wedding magazine for brides worried about getting married in winter when there isn’t brilliant sunshine. Without wishing to make wedding photographers sound miserable, direct bright sunlight is not good for photographs which is why we tend to put people straight into the shade. If we don’t then you get screwed up eyes and perspiring faces (and that’s just the photographer…).

Winter light is softer and less intense, although when it’s low in the sky at the start and end of the day it can be strong. More  often than not it is cloudy and it just means seeking out pockets of light or photographing indoors if it is too cold. In fact I have a wedding tomorrow in Kent where it’s a late kick off and I know it will be too cold to shoot the couple outdoors. Winter weddings can be just as rewarding as those photographed in the summer. Although based as a photographer in Kent I cover weddings, portrait and commercial photography across the UK. Wedding in Bristol – Pete & Laura

Posted on September 15, 2009

Great weather and a wonderful couple – Pete & Laura with their friends and family were married at St Mary The Virgin in Olverston near Bristol with the reception at The Barn in Gloucestershire.  Laura was the sister of Lee who married Emma last year in Surrey and it was a privilege to be asked to photograph another wedding with the same family.

Wedding – Luke & Mypee

Posted on September 7, 2009

Luke & Mypee were married at the Eythorne Baptist church in Kent followed by a reception at the Kent Barn at Great Farthingloe Farm near Dover. It was a great day, staying dry and 120 guests made the most of it.

Training / techie comment: harsh sunshine meant using shade where possible relying on backlighting to the hair and fill in reflection and/or flash. The barn was very dark and I switched for a time to a couple of lights on stands to create pools of light (rather than a flash on top of the camera only). I stopped using the stands and umbrellas  because of the small space vs a large number of toddlers running around!
